Contestant Rules and Conduct
   for Contestants and Animals

Jared’s love of the ranching world encompassed the horsemanship and stockmanship - which often go together and compliment each other - which men and women develop working in big open country.

The livestock events of the Jared Sare Memorial Ranch Rodeos are developed to simulate the situations we find ourselves when working and doctoring large groups of cattle in the open, or against old fences, or when sorting cattle at home where the numbers are high and the pen is large.

It’s hard to take the world of sagebrush, willows, and creeks into an arena, so we do the best we can. The skills of horsemanship and stockmanship which Jared loved are the underlying value of the livestock events.

Teamwork is particularly important when working livestock, so the events have aspects of teamwork, different roles, as well as the individual skills needed when sorting.

In each event, as we have seen in the competitions — “… going slower is going faster.” The events are timed, which eliminates some contestable judgment calls. However, a positive reduction in time is given for skills, and a penalty or addition in time is added when things get wild and scatter the animals.

The Trailer Loading, without roping, is something we do every year. It’s a fun event of working together as a team. The only penalty is “don’t scatter the herd” (but we bet you’ve heard that one before) by loping into the herd after an animal.

Team Sorting/Penning is an event that involves the team when they hold the animal(s). It also highlights the skills of three individual team members as each sorts an animal from the herd out across the line. At home, someone would probably ride in and help with the final cut, but in this event, we highlight the individual to sort all the way out of the herd.

The Big Loop Doctoring (you don’t need to throw a big loop)

Simulates doctoring a sick animal, often more than one, on the range where we gather animal(s), hold the rodeo while one or two people go in and head the individual animal then bring it out of the herd to be doctored. Extra points are given for “fancy shots” … and a straight overhand, sidearm or trap work really well too.

Here are the rules. Have fun and ride on.
